Three Dead, 29 Injured in Train Collision in Egypt’s Nile Delta

In the city of Zagazig, located in Egypt’s Nile Delta, two passenger trains collided on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least three people, including two children.

The Egyptian railway authority reported that the crash occurred in Sharqiya province’s capital. Additionally, the Health Ministry confirmed that 40 others sustained injuries from the collision.

Train accidents are not uncommon in Egypt due to an aging railway infrastructure and management issues. The government has initiated several projects to modernize the rail system. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi announced that 250 billion Egyptian pounds (approximately $8.13 billion) would be required to overhaul the country’s neglected railway network.

Footage from the scene showed a train car severely damaged, with people gathered around attempting to rescue passengers by lifting the injured through windows. Just last month, a train crash in Alexandria claimed two lives when it collided with a truck crossing the tracks.
