On Sunday, September 15, former U.S. President Donald Trump was rushed to safety following what the FBI described as an “apparent assassination attempt.” The incident occurred at Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, prompting a heavy police presence.
Secret Service agents fired at a gunman spotted near the club, who then fled the scene. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw explained that a witness had seen the man escape into a black Nissan and provided authorities with a photo of the vehicle and its license plate. The suspect was later apprehended by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The gunman, identified as 58-year-old Routh Ryan, was located about 360 meters from Trump. Authorities discovered an AK-47 rifle, two backpacks, a scope, and a camera at the scene. Ryan had reportedly been positioning the weapon towards the golf course where Trump was present.
The FBI is leading the investigation, exploring the gunman’s motive. While Ryan previously supported Trump’s 2020 reelection, his recent social media posts have shown alignment with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. He has also been vocal in his support for Ukraine and spent several months in the country.
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, stated that the former president is in “good spirits” following the incident, though there are still many unknowns about the attack. The investigation is ongoing.
