Two members of the Gambian military have been caught with items believed to have been stolen from the former residence of ex-president Yahya Jammeh in Kanilai. The discovery was revealed by Defence Minister Serign Modou Njie during a session at the National Assembly.
Responding to inquiries about the theft, Minister Njie said that the investigation began after several high-value items were reported missing from the compound, now serving as a military barracks. These included a large mattress, several televisions, washing machines, deep freezers, dining chairs, and VIP suits.
The minister explained that a military panel was convened to look into the case. Although not all individuals involved were identified, the investigation led to the recovery of several stolen items from the rooms of two soldiers. Among the recovered items were a large mattress, four chairs, a table, seven cooking pots, three speakers, nine conference microphones, two refrigerators, and a walking stick.
He assured that disciplinary actions would be taken against the soldiers in line with military rules. Despite these findings, many of the missing items are still unaccounted for. A broader investigation involving other security agencies has been ordered to uncover the full extent of the theft.
When asked how the theft could have taken place in such a heavily guarded location, the minister clarified that the stolen goods were taken from apartments in the garden area of the property, not directly under the watch of the soldiers posted at the main residence.
