UK PM Pushes for US Security Guarantee in Ukraine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reiterated his call for a US security guarantee in Ukraine, arguing it is essential to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from future aggression.

Speaking en route to Washington, Starmer emphasized that while discussions on the specifics of such a guarantee are ongoing, he is convinced it is necessary for a lasting peace rather than a temporary ceasefire.

However, former US President Donald Trump has taken a different stance, suggesting that Europe should take greater responsibility for Ukraine’s security. While he acknowledged an expected US-Ukraine minerals deal, he downplayed the idea of broader security commitments.

Following his visit, Trump is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has insisted that security guarantees are crucial for any ceasefire to be effective.

Meanwhile, Starmer has announced an increase in UK defense spending to 2.5% of national income by 2027, a move seen as an effort to strengthen ties with the US. His trip also includes discussions on artificial intelligence and deepening UK-US tech collaboration.
