The United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group will assess The Gambia’s human rights record on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, during a session in Geneva. This marks the fourth time The Gambia undergoes this review, following previous examinations in 2010, 2014, and 2019.
The UPR process involves all 193 UN Member States and evaluates steps taken by the reviewed country to address recommendations from prior reviews, as well as recent human rights developments. The upcoming session, part of the fourth UPR cycle, runs from January 20 to 31, 2025, and includes reviews of 14 countries.
During the session, The Gambia’s delegation, led by Justice Minister Dawda A. Jallow, will outline the nation’s progress in implementing previous recommendations and address any ongoing challenges. The review will be conducted with the support of a “troika” of representatives from Colombia, Kenya, and Spain.
The session will be broadcast live from Room 20 of the Palais des Nations in Geneva from 9:00 to 12:30 (GMT+1). Recommendations for The Gambia will be adopted on January 24, 2025, and the country will have the opportunity to respond to these recommendations.
