UNDP and Partners Launch New Security Sector Reform Project in The Gambia

A new $3 million security sector reform project has been launched in The Gambia, aimed at supporting the country’s ongoing peaceful transition. The three-year project will focus on enhancing the capacities of key security institutions, including the Gambia Armed Forces, Gambia Police Force, Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Gambia Immigration Department.

One of the central objectives of the initiative is to promote gender-responsive reforms within the security sector, ensuring that the rule of law and human rights are upheld. The project seeks to address the barriers limiting women’s participation in the security sector, particularly those rooted in entrenched social and cultural norms. By doing so, it aims to empower women to take on more active roles in decision-making and leadership.

The project also emphasizes building strong, accountable, and effective security institutions that prioritize the protection of human rights. The initiative underscores the importance of strengthening the relationship between security sectors and the citizens they serve, aiming to foster trust and enhance public service delivery.

The launch of this project marks a significant step forward in The Gambia’s efforts to ensure peace, development, and freedom through effective security reforms.
