University of the Gambia Staff Threaten Strike Over Dismissed Lecturers

The University of the Gambia Staff and Faculty Association (UTGFSA) has announced plans for a sit-down strike if the institution’s management and governing council fail to reinstate Dr. Alieu Gibba and Associate Professor Matarr Njie.

The two lecturers were recently dismissed over allegations of tarnishing the university’s reputation through unsubstantiated claims made in the media.

The UTGFSA has also called for the immediate implementation of staff promotions and an independent review of the 2023 promotion recommendations.

During a press briefing, UTGFSA President Dr. Ensa Touray emphasized the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of their members. He stated that the association had already issued a 14-day notice to the Labour Department and made efforts to negotiate on behalf of the dismissed lecturers, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

“We are committed to standing up for our members and ensuring their rights are upheld. Our primary responsibility is to safeguard their interests,” Dr. Touray said. He added that while the association remains open to peaceful negotiations, any actions taken against their members must be legally justified.

UTGFSA Secretary General Yorro Njie also addressed the press, confirming the decision to proceed with industrial action starting Monday, December 2. The strike will focus on three key demands: reinstating the dismissed lecturers, implementing staff promotions, and conducting an independent review of the 2023 promotion recommendations.

Njie reaffirmed the association’s dedication to protecting staff welfare and professional integrity, stating that they will pursue these resolutions vigorously throughout the planned strike.
