The Gambia Police Force announced disciplinary action against an officer involved in a tear gas incident during a protest at the University of The Gambia’s Kanifing campus.
The protest, held on December 2, followed negotiations between students and the university administration. Despite these discussions concluding peacefully, a police officer from the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) independently discharged a tear gas canister, affecting those at the site.
An internal investigation identified the officer responsible, and the PIU has since implemented disciplinary measures. In their statement, the police reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining professional conduct.
The officer’s identity was not disclosed in the statement.
