A staff member of the Central Bank of The Gambia was intercepted over the weekend at a police checkpoint carrying a significant amount of foreign currency in both US dollars and Gambian dalasis.
Although the exact amount remains unconfirmed, reports indicate the individual was found with $57,800 and D370,000 at the Jenoi police checkpoint on the Trans-Gambia Road. Pa Samba Jow, a Gambian civic and human rights activist based in the United States, shared that the suspect is believed to be part of a group of three. Photographs and videos allegedly show the money being counted and handed over to the fraud unit.
Authorities are currently investigating the matter, as the amount of money exceeds the legal limit for travelers to carry. The suspect remains in police custody.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Central Bank or the police have been unsuccessful, as police spokesman ASP Modou Musa Sisawo has not responded to inquiries.
