The Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) has initiated an investigation into claims of tampering with drugs designated for destruction during its recent annual drug disposal exercise.
Commissioner Abdoulie Ceesay, the Agency’s director of media and advocacy, confirmed the ongoing probe but refrained from providing further details, stating that the investigation’s findings would guide any official comments.
Last Thursday, the Agency conducted its drug destruction exercise in Bakau, where large quantities of confiscated drugs, including cannabis, cocaine, skunk, and kush, were incinerated. The event aims to showcase transparency in handling seized drugs from arrest to disposal. Before burning, the scientific unit of DLEAG tested the substances to verify their composition.
However, a source close to the Agency disclosed that some substances left unburned during the exercise were later retested, revealing that they were not cocaine. This prompted the Agency’s director general to call for an immediate inquiry.
A panel comprising representatives from the police, State Intelligence Services, and DLEAG has been formed to investigate the matter. The findings are expected to shed light on the alleged irregularities.
