Popular Congolese musician Delcat Idengo was killed while filming a music video in the conflict-ridden city of Goma, eastern DR Congo. His body was found in the street, with reports suggesting he was shot.
Idengo, known for his politically charged songs, had criticized both the government and rebel forces. His latest track, Bunduki (“weapon” in Swahili), condemned the rebel occupation of Goma. The city has been under the control of the Rwanda-backed M23 group, which is advancing toward another key city, Bukavu, despite ongoing peace efforts.
Government officials blamed M23 for the killing, but the rebel group pointed fingers at government-aligned forces. The musician’s death has sparked protests in his hometown of Beni, where demonstrators are demanding justice.
Idengo had previously faced legal troubles for his outspoken music. He was jailed last year for allegedly inciting violence and pushing for the removal of UN peacekeepers but escaped from prison last month when M23 seized Goma. In 2021, he was convicted of insulting President Félix Tshisekedi but was later acquitted.
Opposition leaders have condemned his killing, calling for an end to the ongoing conflict that has displaced hundreds of thousands. The Congolese Ministry of Arts and Culture described his death as an “assassination,” praising him as a voice for a generation longing for peace.
