The Ecowas Parliament has reiterated its appeal for Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to return to the regional bloc, following their recent withdrawal. The call came at the end of a five-day parliamentary session held in Banjul.
Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr, a prominent member of the parliament, expressed concerns over the political, social, economic, and humanitarian consequences of the exit. He urged the three nations to reconsider their decision, emphasizing unity and collaboration.
“We want you back. Let us come together as a team. No matter what,” Snowe said, highlighting the importance of regional integration for stability and development.
Hon Veronica Sesay, chairperson of the committee on Social Affairs, Gender, Women in Parliament, and Persons with Disability, also appealed to the Sahel countries. She emphasized the shared history of support among Ecowas members and the impact of conflict on vulnerable populations.
“We need you people. We are a bloc. We should be working together,” she said, referencing the solidarity shown during past conflicts in Liberia and Sierra Leone. She noted that women and children bear the brunt of instability, urging leaders to consider their suffering.
Hon Zainab Gimba, in her closing remarks, expressed appreciation to the Gambian government and its people for their hospitality. She praised The Gambia’s continued commitment to regional development and Ecowas objectives.
The meeting concluded with renewed calls for unity, cooperation, and a collective effort to ensure peace and progress within the West African region.
