Kalilou Singhateh, one of the few remaining pre-independence politicians in The Gambia, passed away yesterday. He was believed to be over 90 years old.
Singhateh, originally from Saba in Badibou, made history as the first parliamentarian elected from his region in 1962. He was part of the Gambian delegation that attended the Constitutional Conference at Marlborough House in London, which paved the way for the country’s independence.
During his career, Singhateh served as a minister in the government of former President Sir Dawda Jawara under the PPP regime.
Paying tribute, his former party, the PPP, described him as a staunch advocate for democracy and a key figure in the fight for The Gambia’s independence.
Singhateh’s contributions to the nation remain a testament to his dedication and service to the country.
