Gambian Activist Arrested After Claiming Election Fraud by NPP

Mbemba Drammeh, a Gambian living in France, has been arrested following his public claims of possessing evidence that President Adama Barrow and the National People’s Party (NPP) rigged the 2021 presidential election. Reports indicate that he is currently detained at the Farato Police Station, though no official charges or court dates have been confirmed.

Over the weekend, Seedy Njie, NPP’s deputy spokesperson, denounced Drammeh’s allegations as baseless and defamatory. In a statement, Njie dismissed the claims as malicious fabrications, emphasizing that the 2021 elections were celebrated for their transparency and fairness by local and international observers. Njie further challenged Drammeh to provide evidence for his accusations, warning of potential legal repercussions if he fails to substantiate his claims.

Drammeh, once a vocal supporter of the NPP, previously criticized the Barrow administration, citing corruption and mismanagement as reasons for distancing himself from the party. In a past interview, he expressed his disillusionment with the government’s performance and called for better governance.

This development has sparked mixed reactions as Gambians await further updates on Drammeh’s case.
