Gambian Activist Group to Protest Asset Sales Despite Ban

Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), a civic group protesting alleged corruption in the sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s seized assets, has vowed to hold a demonstration today, despite being denied a permit by police.

The protest follows the publication of an investigative article that raised concerns about irregularities in how Jammeh’s properties were sold after being confiscated on the recommendation of the Janneh Commission.

GALA submitted a request for a protest permit earlier this week and attended a meeting with police officials. However, their application was ultimately rejected.

Speaking at a press conference, GALA representative Omar Camara stated that the protest would proceed regardless of the permit denial. He outlined the group’s demands, including a public release of all confiscated assets, disclosure of buyers and sale prices, transparency regarding proceeds, and independent oversight by parliament and civil society groups.

GALA also called for the withdrawal of former Justice Minister Ba Tambadou’s nomination to the International Court of Justice and urged President Barrow to address the nation on the issue.

“This is not a political protest,” Camara emphasized. “It is about accountability, justice, and restoring public trust. Peaceful assembly is a right, and we will exercise it.”
