GDC Calls for Equal Respect for All Gambians

The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) is urging that every Gambian—regardless of status or position—be treated with dignity and respect.

This call comes in response to the recently passed Criminal Offence Act 2025, which makes it a crime to insult the President and certain senior government officials. While the GDC acknowledges the importance of protecting public officials from verbal abuse, the party emphasizes that respect should not be reserved for only a few.

In a press statement, the GDC said:

> “While we welcome steps to safeguard leaders from insults, we believe respect must be a basic right for everyone—not just for those in power. Disrespect and verbal attacks, in any form, only lead to division and undermine the unity we need to move our country forward.”

The party stressed that laws should be applied fairly and equally to all. It warned against creating a system where some are protected by law while others are left vulnerable to abuse.

> “Whether someone is a leader or an ordinary citizen, everyone deserves to be treated with civility and honour,” the statement added. “True national development comes from a society rooted in mutual respect and peaceful dialogue.”

The GDC concluded by calling on Gambians to reject insults and choose constructive conversations instead. The party believes this is the path to building a stronger, more united Gambia.

> “Let us build a culture where we can disagree without being disrespectful. Our nation will only grow when we choose patience, unity, and respect in all our interactions.”
