Man Charged for Violent Threats and Property Damage in Busumbala

A man from Busumbala, Nicolas Gibba, appeared before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, facing charges of threatening murder and causing deliberate property damage.

The hearing, overseen by Magistrate Sambou, presented two charges against him: threatening violence and willful property damage, both in violation of Gambia’s criminal code.

According to the case details, on August 19, 2024, in Busumbala, Gibba allegedly used a knife and an axe to threaten Lana Jatta and Catherine Gibba, intending to frighten and intimidate them. Additionally, he is accused of destroying two mobile phones—a high-value iPhone 11 Pro Max worth D250,000 and another phone valued at D10,000—by smashing them against a wall, which belonged to the two victims.

When the charges were read in a language he understood, Gibba admitted his guilt. The prosecution did not oppose bail, noting that Gibba suffers from mental health issues. They requested a delay to arrange for the presence of a witness.

Magistrate K.B. Sambou, acknowledging Gibba’s mental health condition, ordered prison authorities and Gibba’s family to arrange his transfer to Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital for assessment and care. The case has been postponed to December11, 2024.
