Military Plane Crash in Sudan Kills Dozens

A Sudanese military aircraft crashed into a residential area in Omdurman, killing at least 46 people and injuring 10 others.

The Antonov plane went down shortly after taking off from Wadi Seidna air base on Tuesday evening, claiming the lives of both military personnel and civilians. Officials suspect a technical malfunction may have caused the crash, though the exact reason remains unclear.

Emergency teams rushed injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital. A senior army commander was reportedly among those killed. Witnesses described a loud explosion as the plane struck homes, causing significant damage and power outages in the area.

This incident occurred just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), currently at war with the Sudanese army, claimed to have shot down a fighter jet in South Darfur. The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has devastated large parts of Sudan, displacing millions and leading to widespread destruction.

Recent military advances have seen the army reclaim parts of Khartoum and surrounding areas from RSF control. However, the war continues to divide the country, with the army holding the north and east, while the RSF controls much of the west and south.
