Nigeria and India Strengthen Ties with Focus on Defence and Development

Nigeria and India have committed to deepening their bilateral relationship, emphasizing enhanced collaboration in defence, trade, and development.

The pledge came during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Abuja, marking the first by an Indian premier in 17 years, at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The leaders discussed expanding strategic partnerships across sectors such as energy, technology, and counter-terrorism. They also highlighted the importance of maritime security and intelligence-sharing to address rising threats in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Guinea, a region notorious for piracy.

President Tinubu praised India’s longstanding support for Nigeria, emphasizing the mutual benefits of their collaboration. Modi underscored the significance of the partnership, noting strong cooperation in health, education, and culture, while pointing to new opportunities for growth.

In recognition of Modi’s visit, Tinubu conferred upon him the title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, Nigeria’s second-highest national honor.

India remains Nigeria’s largest trading partner in Africa, with bilateral trade valued at $14.9 billion in 2022. The Nigerian government is eager to attract more Indian investment and credit facilities to stimulate its economy and create jobs. Over 200 Indian companies and 60,000 Indian nationals currently contribute to Nigeria’s economic landscape.
