South Africa Rejects Trump’s Land Expropriation Claims

South Africa has dismissed accusations by U.S. President Donald Trump that it is unfairly “confiscating” land, following his announcement to cut all U.S. funding to the country.

Trump, without providing evidence, claimed on social media that the South African government was mistreating “certain classes of people” and ordered a freeze on aid pending an investigation.

In response, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation stated that the country’s land policies align with democratic principles and are not exceptional compared to similar laws in other nations.

President Cyril Ramaphosa also refuted the claims, emphasizing that South Africa remains committed to justice and equality. He invited the U.S. administration to engage in discussions for a clearer understanding of the land reform policy.

The recently signed Expropriation Act allows the government to acquire land in the public interest to address historical racial disparities. However, officials clarified that the law does not permit arbitrary seizures, as agreements must be reached with landowners.

Businessman Elon Musk, a South African-born Trump ally, added to the controversy, accusing South Africa of enforcing “racist ownership laws” without providing supporting evidence.

Despite Trump’s threat, Ramaphosa noted that aside from PEPFAR, a U.S. program for AIDS relief, South Africa does not receive significant American financial aid.
