Police in Wellingara are investigating the tragic death of a one-month-old baby girl, believed to have died as a result of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
According to preliminary findings, the infant was allegedly circumcised and later suffered severe bleeding. She was taken to Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Two women suspected of involvement have been taken into custody as investigations continue. The child’s body has been transferred to the RVTH mortuary for further examination.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and have called on the public to report any harmful cultural practices to the nearest police station.
