Authorities in the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) are set to discipline municipal police officers involved in a disturbing incident where a woman was publicly stripped in an attempt to recover allegedly stolen money. The act, which was caught on video, sparked widespread outrage.
The footage showed male officers removing money from the woman’s underwear while her baby was present, prompting public condemnation for what many described as a gross violation of human dignity and an act of indecent exposure.
The chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Emmanuel Joof, confirmed that the council had completed its investigation and disciplinary measures would be taken against the officers involved. He also stated that the NHRC has engaged the KMC on the matter.
In response to the incident, Joof said the commission is exploring the possibility of human rights training for municipal police officers to prevent similar violations and promote respect for personal dignity in law enforcement practices.
