Driver to Face Trial After Court Dismisses Bid to Drop Death by Reckless Driving Charge

Katim Drammeh, a commercial driver accused of causing death through reckless and negligent driving, has been ordered by the High Court to present his defense after his request to dismiss the case was denied.

Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, who presided over the matter, stated that the accused allegedly drove his vehicle in a reckless manner that led to the death of Bakary Keita following a collision with an ambulance.

The judge noted that Drammeh had pleaded not guilty and the prosecution presented six witnesses. One of them gave a vivid description of the accused’s vehicle dangerously swerving into the lane of an oncoming ambulance at high speed, ignoring passengers’ pleas to slow down.

A traffic officer also testified, presenting a sketch of the chaotic scene and highlighting the dangers posed by the driver’s actions.

Justice Jaiteh emphasized that the eyewitness testimonies suggested a willful disregard for safety, not just negligence. He concluded that the prosecution had presented enough evidence to establish a prima facie case.

Although the defense argued that the evidence was insufficient to prove both the cause of death and the alleged recklessness, the court found that both direct and circumstantial evidence linked the accused to the incident. As a result, the judge dismissed the argument and ordered the trial to proceed.
